Volunteer Opportunities

For over four decades after the Museums’ inception in 1951, our collections and facilities were operated solely by community volunteers. Although we now have a team of professional staff, volunteers remain an integral part of our organization. There are so many ways to get involved with the Museums. To learn more, fill out a volunteer application below or contact the Office.

Docent/Greeter

Friendly people who donate a few hours a week to greet Museum visitors. No prior experience or knowledge necessary. Positions available in Eastsound and Crow Valley.

Garden

Help maintain our garden beds and landscape, guided by our lead Master Gardener volunteer.

Office/Collections

Assist with research, organize files, aide in projects/programs, and more.

Orcas Voices: Oral History Project

Transcribe oral history recordings from our collection, learn how to conduct interviews, or support our ongoing oral history project in other ways.

Maintenance

Help with various tasks around the Museums relating to upkeep. Skilled and unskilled labor welcome!

Miscellaneous

One-off events, social media assistance, fundraising, and more! Fill out an application with your interests and skills to learn how best to contribute!

Volunteer Appreciation

Volunteer of the Year

Mary Nash

Business of the Year

David Johnson / 376Tech

Historian of the Year

Irene O'Neill

Volunteer of the Year

Mary Nash

The garden has been thriving at the museum since Mary started volunteering in Fall of 2021. She was helping sell raffle tickets when Many was asked about her other interests and where she might volunteer. Mary enthusiastically replied, “I’d love to work in the garden!”

Business of the Year

David Johnson / 376Tech

In 2017, David joined with Lisa Steckley   to form 376Tech, a computer service company “of islanders for islanders”. David’s experience with computers spans many years, along with his desire to help non-profits. 376Tech comes to our rescue time and time again!

Historian of the Year

Irene O'Neill

Visiting the museum you will be dazed and amazed at Irene’s knowledge and memory for people and events related to Orcas Island. If you are a descendant of a pioneer family, she will likely know your relative of long ago…maybe point out your great-great grandparents in an old photograph in one of the cabins.

Michelle grew up in Whatcom County and has lived on Orcas Island since 2020. In the spring of 2022, she joined the Museums as a weekly docent. She now works as the Program Administrator, and is currently working on revitalizing the Oral History Project and designing new exhibits.

Debbie Durand

An Orcas resident since 2017, Debbie has family ties to what feels like half of Olga and beyond. She teases she knows more of her husband’s family history than he does.
